  2. i am not familiar with the bar-bending sector, nor do i know what constitute a fair wage for the workers, and i also find fixed wage level and working hours for all workers odd.
all i know is these workers suffer a paycut from $1,200 during the economic slump years ago, and i know developers are making good money from building new flats, and their income unaffected by the bad economy.
the salaries of employees in hk has been stalled and failed to grow along with the richest people’s wealth.
i remember when i was young, a clerk post would pay around $5K a month and a clearner at Maxim’s fastfood would pay around $3K, and i remember a CMB bus driver would receive training and be paid $5K a month.
i once worked summer job in a McD in 1980s, i was paid $10/hr. i once worked at a Japanese restuarant for another summer, they paid around $4K a month.
how could people having similarly low class jobs today still earn that little, or some even less, when the descriptive noun for the richest bunch has been upgraded from millionaires by then to billionaires or trillionaires now?
there are many reasons that could explain the widen paygap, but the lowest income earners do not care about those reasons, all they ask for is a little dignity and respect, shown in their paycheck.
employers demanded staff to suck it in, take the hardship with them when businesses shrank during bad times, the deserving staff are just hoping for a fair treatment now that economy is reviving.
for the construction workers, who suffered most in the past decade, it is only fair to give them their old level of wage. and they are not even asking for that $1,200, they are only asking for $950 and eight hours work.
why are these demands seen as monstrous, unachievable goals?

as to “the cost-efficient pre-assembled parts," that is not up to the govt or the workers, it’s developers’ decision.
It’s just like apple daily is outsourcing this column to writers in mainland china who charge for less for writing wiser and more knowledgeable articles, there is nothing you can do, isn’t it?
    that’s demand and supply.
keeping construction workers’ wage low is not going to help them keep ther jobs, cos you never know how low it can go.

as to “the worse-skilled workers driving away better-skilled ones," a flexible wage scale is also not helping cos contractors will definitely look for the cheapest paid workers, creating a vicious cycle of wage reduction.

why would you not find it problematic that you pay same price for all minibuses that run the same route? cos they are charging a level of fare acceptable to the public and drivers.

similarly, the workers are asking not for unacceptably high level of wage and working hours, what they are asking are basic, minimal and pathetic treatment. and who are we to deny them such right?

their action that disrupt traffic over the weekend is not to be encouraged, but if there’s a better, harmonious way out, who would want to lie on a wet pavement in protest on a weekend? wouldn’t they rather be spending time with their families and enjoy the weekend like other more appropriately-paid hk workers?

employers who say higher level of wage cost them business and possibly closure of business are only talking for themselves. the govt has the obligation to stay in the middle if not a little on the workers’ and underprivileged side. if it can’t, just as the hk govt has shown us, it better shut the hell up.
